Noise monitoring
A great deal of work has been done within Rio Tinto to reduce noise exposure, focusing on heavy operating plant equipment. As a result we have initiated a multi-disciplinary, collaborative approach to find practical solutions.
At the La Granja Project we employ experts to measure existing noise levels at La Granja, Mitobamba, Quipayuc, Querocoto, La Palma, Paraguay, Pagaibamba, El Sauce, and Pagaibamba. All fall within the environmental baseline study area.
What do we mean by noise?
- Noise is every sound that disturbs people, irrespective of whether or not it is loud. If it disturbs people, then it is noise.
Why do we measure noise?
Noise disturbs people and is dangerous if it is too loud. It can cause hearing damage.
- To determine the existing baseline noise levels.
- To comply with legislation.
How is noise measured?
- We measure noise with a sound level meter - a recording machine that includes a special microphone to record noise level and the time at which the noise has been produced.
