Engagement

Pooling skills and experience

When we pool skills and expertise with other organisations, we can achieve outcomes that would be impossible for any of us to achieve on our own.  We may not always possess all the appropriate skills or the mandate to manage the matters in hand - such as poverty elimination or climate change.  By working in partnership with the community, environmental organizations, non-government organisations, and governments, we position ourselves to identify and tackle issues of mutual interest more effectively.

Complex relationships

There is a complex relationship between mining operations, environmental conditions, and the social and economic situation in the area. We are constantly learning new ways of working with partners and how mining can facilitate a more sustainable environment.

Rio Tinto's partnership programme

Our partnership programme places strong emphasis on forming active relationships. We not only provide funds but also provide technical and business management skills and participate in the planning and implementation of each project.

We choose community partners that are important to the business and that are represented by organisations with which we share common aims and objectives. The key criterion is that the partnership fits our business focus.
