Local employment programme

One of Rio Tinto-La Granja's policies is to benefit the population in our area of influence through employment, wherever possible. In order to achieve this aim, we designed and have successfully applied a rotational shift work system in the different areas of the Project, which is also extended to all of our strategic partners. This system guarantees the equitable allocation of labour opportunities among the communities, as well as the distribution of economic resources among the population.

Achievements of the local employment programme:

  • 75% of personnel working at the La Granja Project are from communities in our direct area of influence. This includes a significant number of women.
  • The personnel from the communities have increased their income, not only due to work opportunities, but also because of the increase in workday wages. Before the arrival of Rio Tinto, the daily wage ranged between S./7 and S./10. Rio Tinto currently pays a daily wage of S./35.
  • Identification and strengthening of local providers from communities in the direct area of influence and Querocoto.
  • We have begun to acquire local goods and services to address our needs in the area area. A significant number of people work for contractors that provide security, drilling, and camp expansion services. We also implement training programmes to develop labour skills and capabilities.
