Maximising economic impact programme
Situation prior to the start of the Project (2006)::
- Subsistence agriculture and livestock raising, with low productivity levels.
- Scarcity of restaurant and hospitality services.
- Generally poor quality of service across range of local services.
- Absence of technical assistance for agricultural, cattle, commerce, and services businesses.
- Poor condition of sole access road.
- Limited cargo and passenger transportation services.
- Limited acquisition capability of local population.
Objectives of the Programme to maximize economic impact:
- Develop technical competencies needed by producers and business owners to improve their productivity levels.
- Develop management skills that will permit them to better administer their resources and optimize the economic benefits.
- Develop technical competencies need to undertake new business ventures that will enable them to address demand generated by Rio Tinto and access new markets.
Achievements of the Programme to maximize economic benefit:
- Establishment and strengthening of the Communal Educational Council with representation of all the communities, as the entity responsible for coordination and promotion of technical training.
- Development of training courses in: Crop Management, Livestock Management, Management of Greenhouses and Orchards, Cooking, and Pastry-making.
- Strategic partners that contribute towards the improvement of technical skills of local personnel that they hire.
- Over 300 men and women have been trained to improve production and their businesses.
